I would say Melodic, but, that is not a choice, and I think that it is, somewhat, power and prog.......but, I will leave that up to others to clarify. Very Happy

I'd say Deathmetal, then heavy, thrashy powermetal ala Brainstorm, Pyramaze, Iced Earth, Dark Empire, et al.....for some reeason I voted thrash as well, though for me that pretty much means old Metallica, Megadeth, a couple Slayer discs, and recent Kreator..... Also a MASSIVE Iron Maiden fan......

My favorite bands tend to be very, very heavy, but equally melodic....Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquility, Iced Earth, Brainstorm. Lately, Dark Empire and the newest Blaze Bayley are what's doing it for me, though I typically prefer harsher vocals.....

WEll, you will either love or hate his vocals. I don't know if you've heard the Maiden albums he's on....but he's got a LOT lower eregister than dickinson, and his voice itself has a rather unique character to it. Musically, it's ALMOST a melodic deathmetal/powermetal hybrid. It's also a slight grower, took me 2 listens thru it, where I wasn't totally thrulled with it, ut on the 3rd listen, everything clicked, and I think it's one of the best discs of '08.....

I don't know about the deathmetal hybrid thing...but I have liked what I've heard of his solo stuff so far. More pallatable than Dickinson, IMO.

Totally differing styles, though. Neither of them have much in common with Maiden, either.

and really, what is Gothenberg styled melodic deathmetal, but thrashy powermetal with death vocals?

yep, that tends to sum it up well.. although for one the writing dynamic really does take a wholly different turn since the vocals rely on rhythmic hooks instead of melody, and the Gothenburgish stuff also tends to take a different influence off of Maiden than normal power metal does, guitar wise... they go in very different directions, for some reason. Unfortunately I think it can be easier to wear out the formula the melo-death stuff relies on though. And when it's watered down....ugh. The last thing I heard that really did it well without a bunch of the MTV stuff thrown in was probably that newest Immortal Souls.

I'm aware there's a big style gap...but since the Maiden thing was brought up, I felt like giving my two cents.

And I think the Gothenburg thing might be a little more complex than that. I was just remarking that I didn't hear deathmetal in Bayley.

just remember, I listen to that sort of thing (and heavier), ALMOST exclusively....so, it' s probably just a natural connection for me to make.

I heard that Maiden album he was on.. Virtual or whatever. It's one of the worst albums I've ever heard. But, it was many years ago that I listened to it, and I've always been a fan of Bruce.... So I'll still check it out.
